One the important things when using a walker or a mobility aid are the "cues," which to me are the head messages that one sends to oneself. This video talks about the external and internal cues that can help a person. The video is aimed at people who have Parkinson's, but it deals with others, too.

Info That May Be Helpful


 

She talks a mile a minute and, being British, she has an accent, but this can be good for people who have problems walking and particularly those who have a medical issue. Embarrassment is a real issue for some, if not for all, and embarrassment is just keeping a person down, mentally and physically. Go out, if you can. Be active, if you can. Even what seems like an insignificant amount will help.

Those Heavy Doors



One problem that I have is the anti-wind heavy building doors in Stuy Town. I'm passably okay with using my upper strength and leaning into the door with my outstretched hand, but this can be a pain in the ass. I almost fell when a person, who I didn't see, tried to help me by pushing the door while I was opening it. My balance was gone. A lot of times, people who go in and out see me coming and hold the door open, for which I am thankful. But those heavy door can be a problem. This video clip has another strategy.
